Christian Grüny beschäftigt sich mit den unterschiedlichen Logiken verschiedener künstlerischer Felder und Disziplinen, den Interferenzen, Übergängen und Unvereinbarkeiten zwischen ihnen. Insgesamt interessiert ihn die Auseinandersetzung mit künstlerischen Arbeiten mehr als die Philosophie.
Von 2008-2014 war er Juniorprofessor für Philosophie an der Universität Witten/Herdecke. 2013 vertrat er den Lehrstuhl für Philosophie (Ludger Schwarte) an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Von Oktober 2014 bis September 2015 war er Gastwissenschaftler am Max-Planck-Institut für empirische Ästhetik in Frankfurt, wo er sich in Bezug auf die Möglichkeit empirischer Ästhetik eine gesunde Skepsis bewahrt hat. Im Sommersemester 2016 hat er den Lehrstuhl für theoretische Philosophie (Petra Gehring) an der TU Darmstadt vertreten, 2020-2023 war er Senior Researcher wiederum am Max-Planck-Institut für empirische Ästhetik.
Seit Sommersemester 2023 ist er Professor für Ästhetik und Theorien der Gegenwart am Campus Gegenwart der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart.
Er ist Mitherausgeber der Reihe Ästhetiken X.0: Zeitgenössische Konturen ästhetischen Denkens, Redaktionsmitglied des Journal Phänomenologie, Mitglied des Editorial Boards von Musik & Ästhetik und seit 2018 des Beirats der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Ästhetik.
Christian Grüny is working on the different logics of the various artistic fields and disciplines, the frictions, transitions, and incommensurabilities between them. Overall he is more interested in looking at, listening to, and thinking about art than in philosophy.
From 2008-2014, he was assistant professor of philosophy at the University Witten/Herdecke. In 2013, he was interim chair of philosophy (Ludger Schwarte) at the Art Academy Düsseldorf.
From October 2014 until September 2015 he was visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute of Empirical Aesthetics where he remained skeptical about the idea of an empirical aesthetics. In 2016 he was interim chair of theoretical philosophy (Petra Gehring) at the University Darmstadt, from 2020 to 2023 he was senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Empirical Aesthetics.
Since March 2023 he is Professor of Contemporary Aesthetics at the Campus Gegenwart of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart.
He co-editor or the book series Ästhetiken X.0: Zeitgenössische Konturen ästhetischen Denkens, member of the editorial board of Journal Phänomenologie and Musik & Ästhetik. Since 2018 he is also a member of the advisory board of the German Society of Aesthetics.
